WHAT IS NERVANIX?

As the leader in practical applications of neuroscience for learning, Nervanix makes instruction and learning more effective by making it more efficient. Pioneering an entirely new category in learning known as “Attention Adaptivity”, our mission is to increase academic achievement by responding to and nurturing an individual’s cognitive abilities.

WHAT IS ATTENTION ADAPTIVITY™ ?

Attention Adaptivity is the process of using an individual’s attention, as measured through EEG brainwave monitoring, to inform the instructional process and empower that process to adapt accordingly. Whether teacher led, learner driven or software based; the instructional paradigm shifts in response to the attention of the learner. The learner has the ability to know at a glance exactly where there is need for review of studied material. The teacher knows which learner may need a little nudge. The learning management system (LMS) knows which types of learning objects work for certain types of learners. The publisher of instructional materials knows which elements of a product elicit attention and which don’t. All of these are examples of attention driving adaptivity in the learning process.

WHAT TYPE OF HEADSETS DOES NERVANIX USE, AND WHAT SPECIFIC MODELS DOES IT SUPPORT?

Nervanix currently partners with NeuroSky, the manufacturer of the Mindwave (utilizes a wireless USB adapter) and Mindwave Mobile (Bluetooth enabled). These devices are bundled with our Nervanix software applications and sold as solutions to address various uses and market segments. While NeuroSky is our primary partner, we also develop our software applications to be platform and device agnostic. As various Nervanix products are brought to market, they will all be interoperable with other EEG headset technologies.

HOW MANY PRODUCTS DOES NERVANIX OFFER?

Our first product to market is Nervanix Clarity™, which is designed specifically for individual-driven learning (studying). With that said, our product roadmap is quite robust and extensive. We plan to bring multiple products to various market segments over the coming months and years that will empower teachers, administrators, publishers and parents with uniquely powerful information and analytics.

WHAT IS NERVANIX CLARITY™ ?

Nervanix Clarity empowers learners to engage their study material in an entirely new and unique way. It guides learners back to specific sections within their study material where they may not have been paying attention. Using a simple and safe EEG headset, Nervanix Clarity measures the attention levels of learners as they study and paces along with them as they navigate a page, watch a video, listen to a recording or interact with a digital manipulative. At the end of study sessions, learners can view their results and see where their attention was highest and lowest, indicating where they may need to review critical pieces of materials that they may have initially missed.

WHICH OPERATING SYSTEMS ARE COMPATIBLE WITH NERVANIX CLARITY?

Nervanix Clarity has been formally tested on Windows 7 & 8, as well as Mac OS 10.7 and 10.8. While Nervanix Clarity does not support Windows XP or Mac 10.6 or earlier, the application does run on those systems.

WHICH HARDWARE DEVICES ARE COMPATIBLE WITH NERVANIX CLARITY?

Any computer or laptop that runs the operating systems mentioned above. Computers and laptops must have a working Internet connection and have a USB port and/or Bluetooth compatibility. Future releases of the application will run on iOS and Android for mobile devices.

DOES NERVANIX CLARITY COLLECT OR USE ANY PRIVATE DATA?

No. Nervanix Clarity does not collect personal identifying information (PII) on learners. The brainwave data are run through an algorithm that generates an attention metric. Once that attention metric is generated, the brainwave data are discarded and forgotten. The attention metric is the byproduct that informs the analysis driving subsequent instructional adaptivities. That attention byproduct currently remains for the duration of the study session, but it too is discarded when the session ends. Future enhancements to Nervanix Clarity will allow all stakeholders to save and use attention data to help inform other processes and contribute to powerful insights and analytics. However, even with such enhancements, Nervanix does not and will not collect nor store any data (biometric or otherwise) that could possibly be used to personally identify a learner.

DOES NERVANIX SHARE APPLICATION DATA?

No. Nervanix uses data from its applications to evaluate and improve its products. However, such use of data is strictly internal, secure and anonymous. Our customers own their data. Under no circumstance will Nervanix share application data with a 3rd party unless that data has been completely anonymized and the owner of the data agrees to share. Aggregated application data and broad metrics may be used and shared for the purpose of demonstrating, say, the effectiveness of an open-sourced learning object based upon how a large group of anonymous learners engage with certain attributes of that learning object. But, in no way would an individual, a school, a district or a corporate partner be at all compromised by the use or sharing of such data. HOW DOES PLAY FUNCTION WORK?

When a learner presses the Play button, two things happen: (1) the video or audio file begins to play; and (2) data from the headset begin to record. Nervanix Clarity connects the attention scores with the points along the timeline of the video or audio file and then reports them to the learners at the end of the study session. In future releases, the Play function will also record attention scores as learners engage with text-based (eg. PDF, digital textbook, etc) materials. In those use cases, Nervanix Clarity will connect attention scores with eye-movement-tracking technology, so that learners will be able to see what their attention scores are when they are looking at a particular sentence, paragraph, chart, table, picture, etc.

WHAT IS A PIN, AND HOW IS IT USED?

A pin is simply an indicator used by a learner to mark, or “pin” a section or segment of study material that may have triggered a particular feeling within the learner (i.e., confusing, interesting, complex, etc.). The pin simply prompts the learner to go back and review that particular piece of material with the option for the learner to log a comment on why it was pinned. The pin feature is also independent from the attention analysis. Whereas the attention feedback relies simply on the learner to “just think”, the pin function is completely learner-driven and offers a healthy balance of interactivity in the study process.

WHAT DOES THE COLOR GRAPH REPRESENT?

The graph in both the review mode and in the session report allows for the visualization of attention in two ways. The peaks and valleys of the attention graph indicate high points and low points of attention, as do the colors underneath the line graph. The more blue, the higher the attention. The more red, the lower the attention.

HOW CAN I GET A HIGHER ATTENTION SCORE?

Learners can increase their attention score by reviewing the segments of the study material where their attention was lower than desired. As learners focus on the material more intently, their attention scores will rise, keeping in mind that attention scores are unique to each individual.

HOW DO I KEEP MY RESULTS?

At the end of the study session, learners have the option to print their results, download them as a PDF or email them. Future updates to Nervanix Clarity will include the ability to save and export more granular attention metrics. This will allow for more in-depth individual analysis, aggregate analysis of groups over time, and more abstract analyses involving interoperable systems or data sets.

CAN I USE NERVANIX CLARITY WITH ANY INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL?

Currently, Nervanix Clarity works with instructional videos (i.e., video files, Khan Academy tutorials, YouTube videos), as well as audio files. However, future releases will work with “static” study material such as digital textbooks, PDFs, .doc, xls, .ppt, etc.

HOW WILL FUTURE ENHANCEMENTS OF NERVANIX CLARITY (WHICH INCLUDE THE ABILITY TO ANALYZE ATTENTION WITH STATIC READING MATERIAL) WORK EXACTLY?

Nervanix Clarity will incorporate eye-movement-tracking technology using the camera on the learner’s computer or mobile device. The application knows where the learners’s eyes are focused on the screen at any given moment in time, and then cross-references his eye placement with his attention level at that moment. If the learner is looking at a paragraph, and not paying sufficient attention, then that paragraph will be highlighted at the end of the study session, with a recommendation that the learner go back and re-read that specific paragraph.

WHO SHOULD USE NERVANIX CLARITY?

Any learner seeking to make the studying process more efficient and effective is the ideal user. WHAT DOES THE “VARIABILITY” SCORE MEAN ON THE RESULTS SCREEN?

We use a very common calculation from the field of classical statistics: variance. We measure the variability of a person's attention level scores from moment-to-moment by using average scores and standard errors.

ARE THERE ANY UNDESIRED OR DANGEROUS SIDE-EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH USING THE EEG HEADSET?

Absolutely not. The headset simply “listens” to what the brain is already doing by measuring frequencies and wavelengths of alpha, beta, gamma and theta waves. It is a one-way street, with the brainwave going from the brain to the sensor on the headset. NOTHING is going into the brain, and there are no stimuli being applied to the brain. The device and the process are 100% safe.

NERVANIX CLARITY DOES NOT DO THE FOLLOWING:

Nervanix Clarity does not read minds… at least not in any telepathic manner. It monitors brainwaves, and determines attention.
